Metals We
Accept

Understanding the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals can help you sort your scrap effectively. Here’s a quick overview of the two categories and the types of metals we accept under each.

Ferrous Metals

Ferrous metals contain iron and are magnetic. They are known for their durability and strength, making them popular in construction, tools, and appliances. The types of ferrous metals we accept include:

Prepared Heavy Melting Steel (HMS 1 and HMS 2)

HMS 1 doesn’t contain black and galvanized steel; HMS 2 does. The material must be 1/4 inch thick or more with material no larger than 2 feet by 5 feet in size.

Unprepared HMS

This is larger in size than prepared HMS. Materials should stay within the 6 feet by 20 feet range. It can contain non-ferrous attachments.

Steel Busheling

No. 1 busheling is clean steel scrap. It doesn’t exceed 12 inches in any of its dimensions. Examples include new factory busheling, sheet clippings, stampings.

Plate & Structural Steel

This is a cut grade of ferrous scrap. It is presumed to be free of contaminants. Examples include steel plates, structural shapes, crop ends, shearings.

Machine Shop Turnings

Generated in shops, machine shop turnings are made of clean steel or wrought iron. Examples include bushy turnings, low alloy turnings, alloy-free turnings.

Appliances

These are large household appliances. Examples include stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, and AC units.

Auto Cast

Clean auto cast is free of all steel parts except camshafts, valves, valve springs, and studs. Examples include clean auto blocks, intakes, rotors.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel has many grades and types, including clean and dirty. It is used on sinks, faucets, appliances, automobiles, and motorcycles.

Cast Iron

An alloy of iron containing high amounts of carbon, cast iron scrap is mainly found as castings, sinks, machinery, old automobiles, pipe, and engine blocks.

Rails

Rail scrap can be carbon or alloy, and of various lengths, weights, and configurations. It may have joint bars, bolts, and rail anchors attached.

Light Iron

Light iron is thin gauged steel. It is typically found in household appliances, desks, computer hardware, automobiles. It is usually bailed or crushed.

Vehicles

We recycle end-of-life vehicles, responsibly processing old cars and trucks into reusable scrap metal materials.

Non-Ferrous Metals

Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron and are not magnetic. They are resistant to rust and corrosion, making them ideal for gutters, water pipes, roofing, and electrical applications. The types of non-ferrous metals we accept include:

Aluminum

Lightweight and silver-colored, aluminum has many types, including aluminum sheet, cast aluminum, aluminum wire, and aluminum rims.

Copper

Copper is very valuable in scrap recycling. Grades include #1 copper, #2 copper, bare bright copper, #1 insulated wire, and #2 insulated wire.

Lead

Lead is a malleable metal that can withstand corrosion from moisture. Examples include weights, pipes, gutters, and pellets.

Zinc

Zinc is widely used in galvanization, which is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to iron or steel to prevent rust.

Tin

Tin is often used to coat steel to prevent corrosion and tinplate steel is widely used to make tin cans for food packaging.

Brass

Brass is a very heavy metal composed of copper and zinc and often used in plumbing fixtures and at the end of copper piping.
